How are culture and “wellbeing” related?

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could measure the connections between productivity,  a positive culture, and the sense of well being in our  workplaces  and communities?  The Canadian Wayne Clancy owns the site www.mindsuitemetrics.com and is one researcher intrigued by this question.   I hope you go to his site,  and take the brief Arizona State University Humanities Project assessment as a way  to move this research forward.  His work, in collaboration with John King, will also allow companies to measure their culture as viewed by their  employees. It then can also elegantly integrate an assessment of employee well being,  and match that to productivity.  When something is below the company goals, it can be targeted and fixed!    What a giant step forward . This is way more than BMI, exercise bonuses, executive coaching, and leadership retreats to boost business growth.   This data will help create workplaces and  communities that thrive in the future.  Coaching can be targeted where it is most needed.

I am honored to have also worked with my colleague Manon Dulude in the past three years to prepare the well being assessment match to our comprehensive coaching model.  That model, the Coaching Continuum TM,  can be used by coaches to propel clients forward in a more effective way.    We will be training corporations and communities to match coaching tools to needs.

All that is exciting, but you may be wanting me to back up and answer   “What exactly IS well being? “  The delight of “well being” resembles art or great music;  it is more than the sum of its’ parts. We know when we are  in the presence of someone who is vital and “well”, as we will find these  qualities:

  • resilience
  • personal energy
  • positive emotional connection
  • physical wellness
  • sound judgment
  • mental focus
  • and the ability to regulate emotions.

What if we all began this growth at home?  How recently have you examined how your own sense of well being measures up ? As you looked through the list above, what qualities were struggling?   Are you at times not very resilient, isolated, or ignoring your drooping mental and physical energy?   “Boomers” at the career stage of mentoring younger workers or volunteers particularly need to understand how enhancing their own well being can contribute vital leadership to their culture.

I propose that our own well being influences our culture, our values influence our culture, and our culture influences our productivity and well being.  What do YOU think?  I would love to get your thoughts before we get the research results.  I encourage you to stay tuned for more on this fascinating topic of real, data-based, thriving change.
